Social Media
Social media, as a means of digital media, will remain as an important part of our lives for many years. The use of technology to communicate with others has impacted our society. This impact has shifted the way Americans think throughout their daily lives. On average, Americans check their phone over 100 times a day. “According to figures collected by a screen lock app, the average user actually checks their phone around 110 times day. During peak times this equates to once every six or seven seconds, with some users unlocking their devices up to 900 times over the course of a day, which in reality is around 18 hours.” This dramatic amount of times we check our phones throughout the day has a direct link with the “addiction” of social media websites.
The ability to have Internet connection at the tip of our fingers is remarkable. It gives us the ability to communicate with those across the world, online shop, and discuss our individual opinion freely. These prove the immense influence social media has on humans and their new way of communicating. Various social network websites have been created and have flourished into multibillion-dollar businesses. The creator of Facebook’s networth is 3.7 billion. “ Shares were up about 29.6%, sending the Facebook chief’s net worth up nearly $3.7 billion in one day.” Knowing the outcome and riches a social media website could bring, many people have dedicated their lives to creating bigger and better websites.
One very important aspect of social media websites is that people can feely express their emotions. Just about anything can be posted onto your personal social media sites. Many sites also allow comments (opinions) of others. The ability to comment on others posts has created instant communication from person to person. This has created both positive and negative outcomes. I personally think comments on social media could harm the ethos of many individuals. I refrain from commenting anything negative on others web pages.
Social media within our society has created a social community. It has created a community that exists amongst individuals who communicate via social media. Although specific social media websites will go out of style, social media as a whole will continue to grow with the creation of new web pages. Social media is one branch of digital media and has drastically changed the way Americans think and communicate with one another.
